SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Robin Izzo
Assistant Environmental Director, Princeton University

Robin Izzo has been involved in diverse activities with the Environmental Health and Safety group at Princeton, including laboratory activities, hazardous waste, theatre arts, compliance auditing, training, indoor air and sustainability. Robin is active in the C2E2, the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) and is currently co-chair of the “Coordinating Committee” of the EPA Higher Education Sector Strategies Initiative.

Ralph Stuart
Environmental Safety Manager, University of Vermont

Ralph Stuart has been in the Risk Management Department at the University of Vermont since 1985. He has led the development of the Environmental Safety program there since that time, including participation in the Lab XL project for regulatory reinvention with the EPA. He has a bachelor's degree in geologic engineering from Cornell University and a master's degree in environmental engineering from UVM. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and is active in the C2E2, American Chemical Society's Division of Chemical Health and Safety and the UVM Environmental Council.

Tom Ouimet
Independent Contractor, Yale University

Since 1988, he has been employed by Yale University where he has held a variety of positions including, Manager of Chemical and Physical Safety and Associate Director, Occupational Health and Safety. He currently works part time for Yale as a project manager and as an independent consultant. For the past ten years Tom has been very involved in the development of safety training programs and evaluating the use of advanced training technologies. He has produced more than fifteen training videos, two simulations, as well as a whole bunch of web-based programs in conjunction with the Yale’s Center for Advanced Instructional Media. Tom is a certified industrial hygienist and safety professional. Tom has a passion for videography and is currently exploring how DVDs, and particularly the new high definition formats, can be used to provide flexible, interactive, employee training. Tom has a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and two Master’s degrees – one in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan and the other in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut.

Frank Shaefer
Assistant Director of Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health
The Rockefeller University

Frank Schaefer is the Assistant Director of Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health at The Rockefeller University, a world renowned biomedical facility located in New York City. Mr. Schaefer has worked at Rockefeller for 15 years and is responsible for managing all environmental and occupational health and safety programs. He received his Masters degree in Occupational and Environmental Health Science from Hunter College and is currently working on developing an EHS-MS for the University, as well as developing various recycling programs in response to Rockefeller’s Green Initiative.

Mary House
Vice President, Woodard & Curran

Mary House is a Vice President at Woodard & Curran, a 500-person, integrated engineering, science and operations company. Ms. House is a chemist specializing in the design, development and implementation of electronic environmental management system tools. She has implemented web-based electronic tools at numerous colleges, universities and hospitals as part of environmental management system and sustainability initiatives, or as a follow on to compliance audits.

Suzanne Howard
Director, EH&S, Wellesley College

Suzanne Howard is the Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Wellesley College. Previously she worked as consultant specializing in the college and university sector and as a project manager for the Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence. Prior, she was Director of EH&S at Boston College for nine years. She holds a Masters degree in Environmental Health from Boston University and a B.S. in Biology.

Robert Foster
Director of Marketing, Environmental Health and Engineering, Inc.
Robert Foster, M.S., is the Director of Marketing for Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E). He has previously held positions as Staff Scientist and Director of Marketing within Thermo Electron where he directed efforts towards new product development in the area of atomic spectroscopy. He is presently engaged with developing unique knowledge-based products designed to make the specialized expertise of EH&E’s experts available to a wider audience.

Steven R. Brehio,
Associate Director, EH&S Northeastern University

Steven R. Brehio is Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Northeastern University with responsibility for laboratory safety, hazardous waste management, EHS software and environmental management.
Steve is a board certified Safety Professional and Hazardous Material Manager with more than 20 years experience in higher education. He holds a master of science (MS) in Environmental Health Engineering from Northeastern University, and a bachelor of science (BS) in Natural Resources from the University of Rhode Island. He has also held an adjunct faculty appointment at Northeastern University in the School of Professional and Continuing Education.

Steve serves as Treasurer and Board of Director for both the Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence and NELRAD (a consortium of radioactive material users). Prior to coming to Northeastern University, Steve worked as an Environmental Police Officer with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

Ahren Cotten
Systems Analyst, Carnegie Mellon University

Ahren Cotten joined Carnegie Mellon University’s Environmental Health and Safety department in the Fall of 2003. As the Systems Analyst, his accomplishments include the development of ALERT – an interactive tool used for laboratory audits and emergency response. He currently holds a Degree in IT Specialized Technology and is working on his MIS degree at Carnegie Mellon University.


Matthew D. Finucane
Director, Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety
University of Pennsylvania

As director of the University of Pennsylvania's Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety at Penn, Matt is responsible for biological, chemistry and radiation safety in Penn’s 5,000 + laboratories, environmental compliance and occupational safety across the University. Matt supervises a staff of 43 professional, technical, and administrative personnel. Before coming to Penn in 1981, Matt was an industrial hygienist with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and prior to that he consulted at the National Aeronautic and Space Administration Langley Research Center and the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Virginia. Matt is certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. Matt has served on the executive committee of the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA), including a term as Chairman. Matt is also active in the American Industrial Hygiene Association where he served chairman of the Laboratory Health and Safety Committee, and Biohazards Committee. Matt has a BS in Environmental Health and MS in Organizational Dynamics.

Bill Brewer, Ph.D.
Director of Environmental Programs, Duke University

Bill Brewer is Director of Environmental Programs in the Occupational Environmental & Safety Office at Duke University. He is responsible for environmental stewardship, environmental compliance, and waste management services. His prior experience includes (a) Director of Environmental Management – NCR Corporation, Dayton, Ohio; (b) Environmental Director – AT&T Corporation; (c) Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences – Wright State University; and (d) Assistant Professor of Environmental Health – East Tennessee State University. Bill holds a BS in Biology from Clemson University, an MS in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Joni Kirk
Business Development Manager, Quality Attributes Software

Joni Kirk is a Business Development Manager for Quality Attributes Software specializing in GreenTouchscreen® kiosks. Joni works with higher education institutions to implement customized kiosks in new and existing buildings on their campuses, focusing on renewable and reusable energy, LEED® certification, and the promotion/education of sustainability.
