NEW INITIATIVE
MAKES PITTSBURGH CAMPUS SECOND IN NATION FOR PURCHASING
WIND-GENERATED POWER
Program Expected To Save the College $10,000-$15,000 Annually
PITTSBURGH (September 27, 2002) ...
Friday, September 27th is the 40th
anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. Chatham
College, Carson's alma mater, is celebrating this anniversary by launching
a new initiative to work towards eliminating toxic chemicals from their
campus. Chatham is working with Pittsburgh-based GreenMarketplace.com to
source cleaning products and other commonly used products that are
non-toxic.
Throughout the implementation, National
Wildlife Federation will follow the
results for future application at other college campuses through its Campus
Ecology Program.
Ms. Carson, a 1929 alumna of the
Pennsylvania College for Women, now known
as Chatham College, died at the age of 57 from breast cancer. Her death
came just two years after publishing her seminal book detailing the impact
of toxic chemicals on the earth. In her ground-breaking work Silent Spring,
she described how then-new pesticides were ravaging the biological systems
they were sprayed upon, while creating vibrant images of living systems in
order to do so.
"Forty years ago Rachel Carson
alerted the world to the dangers of
pesticides and toxic chemicals," said Dr. Esther L. Barazzone, Chatham
President. "Today, Chatham College is proud to launch new initiatives that
are not only environmentally sensitive and essential to the health and
safety of our community, but also economically feasible. We will continue
to eliminate toxic chemicals from the campus when feasible."
eCollegie Stage 2 is grounded by the TRAC Initiative: Toxic Reduction and
Alternatives on Campus. The initiative's first projects will include:
- Partner with PPG Industries
to purchase the company's Pure Performance
VOC- free (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint.
- Partner with Green Village Inc. and Pittsburgh-based GreenMarketplace.com
to purchase toxic-free cleaning supplies.
- Phase out the use of herbicides and insecticides on campus.
In addition to toxin reduction, Chatham
College will purchase ten percent
of its energy from wind-generated sources, joining 30 other Pennsylvania
colleges and universities that also purchase wind-generated power.
According to the National Wildlife Federation, only Catholic University of
America in Washington, DC purchases more, at eleven percent. As a result
of RCI's efforts to reduce toxins on campus and to further the work of Ms.
Carson, the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program will
follow the college's efforts and showcase them in a future case study.
"By initiating a variety of
environmentally healthy practices, Chatham is
setting a standard for other colleges and universities to follow," said
Mark Van Putten, President and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation.
"The commitment Chatham is making demonstrates the impact colleges can
have
on the well-being of their student body and the whole college community."
"A Chatham College education
is built upon the pillars of leadership,
global awareness and the environment," Dr. Barazzone added. "This
program
enables us to further fulfill our mission and establish the campus as a
model environment for our students, faculty, staff and alumnae."
