A Green Chemistry Workshop
at

Pfizer Global Research & Development – Groton Laboratories
April 16-17, 2003

Chemists entering the world of industry, particularly the pharmaceutical industry, often find they are not prepared for many of the challenges associated with the design and application of chemical technology within a commercial R&D setting. There are complex issues of safety, scale-up, engineering, regulatory constraints, timelines and economics to be dealt with. Importantly, there is an increasing need to understand the environmental impact of a particular synthesis and how to apply good science to minimize these impacts.

At Pfizer, we believe that the knowledge and application of Green Chemistry principles will become more essential within R&D in order to achieve economic and environmental sustainability.

To explore these concepts and to encourage active participation of students, Pfizer’s Groton Laboratories in Groton, CT is sponsoring a workshop on Sustainable Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Industry. The workshop will deal with real world examples and include interactive breakout sessions with Pfizer chemists. This exciting opportunity is intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduate students considering careers in chemistry. Dr. John Warner of UMASS - Boston and co-author of Green Chemistry Theory and Practice, will also be participating in the workshop.
