The "Best Workplaces for Commuters," a nationwide program and a project of Commuter Choice Leadership Initiative, a partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) named this year's best workplaces for commuters. Harvard University, MIT, UMass Amherst, the University of Vermont, and Yale made the list among 80 in New England!

Vermont Campus Greening Conference Gathers Environmental Leaders Associate professor of natural resources, Stephanie Kaza, and her colleagues on the UVM Environmental Council spearheaded the first

Hammond Creighton, an environmental manager at Tufts University and author of 'Greening the Ivory Tower', spoke of "from ideology to action".

EPA's Office of Solid Waste held a public meeting this summer, to discuss issues associated with hazardous waste management in research and/or academic laboratories. EPA’s progress on issues specific to waste management in research and academic laboratories, and individual stakeholder approaches to addressing these issues were discussed.

EPA's Office of Solid Waste held a public meeting on June 18, 2003, to discuss issues associated with hazardous waste management in research and/or academic laboratories. The purpose of the meeting was to present EPA’s progress on issues specific to waste management in research and academic laboratories and solicit input from individual stakeholders on approaches to addressing these issues.

The University of Vermont, the University of Massachusetts-Boston, and Boston College Receive National Award for Environmental Protection Project
The Environmental Health and Safety programs at the three colleges received a national award at the International Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) Conference held July 15, 2003, in Nashville, Tenn. The award recognizes innovative environmental protection practices in higher education.

New England's Commuter Choice Employers - Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
EPA Regional Administrator Robert W. Varney, Massachusetts Environmental Affairs Secretary Ellen Roy Herzfelder, and Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Daniel A. Grabauskas, recognized 33 New England area companies and organizations for the strong commuter benefit packages they offer to 48,000 area workers. To better recognize employers that meet these stringent requirements, the name of the program is being changed to "Best Workplaces for Commuters." Four institutions in New England have been recognized to include: Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. "These organizations are setting the bar in providing real financial incentives to encourage employees to leave their cars at home and commute in ways that reduce traffic congestion and air pollution." Varney said.
