Regulation of Laboratory Air Emissions

A general overview of how the Clean Air Act affects college and university campuses is provided in an article written by Tim Ryan of the University of Houston.

Many states have developed regulations which can affect laboratory air emissions. As an example California regs are summarized in a table from California.

In 1990, the reauthorization of the Clean Air Act contained a provision that laboratory operations be equitably treated with regard to their air emissions. In 1997, the EPA began an effort to define what this treatment should consist of. After a public hearing in November, 1997 in North Carolina, a Special Interest group was formed to explore this issue with the EPA. A on-going collection of documents is assembled here.
