As part of the Laboratory XL project, the University of Vermont Environmental Safety Facility staff is developing an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Use of Hazardous Materials in Laboratories. The EMP is modelled on the concept of an environmental management system (e.g. ISO 14000), but its scope is limited to specific aspects of laboratory activities.

The purpose of this EMP is fourfold:to improve pollution prevention efforts within the laboratory process;to achieve regulatory compliance;to increase the environmental awareness of laboratory workers and students; andto create a system which promotes continous improvement of the environmental impacts of laboratory work.

To date, these parts of the EMP have been developed:
