As part of the Laboratory XL project, the University of Vermont Environmental Safety Facility staff is developing an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Use of Hazardous Materials in Laboratories. The EMP is modelled on the concept of an environmental management system (e.g. ISO 14000), but its scope is limited to specific aspects of laboratory activities.

The purpose of this EMP is fourfold:to improve pollution prevention efforts within the laboratory process;to achieve regulatory compliance;to increase the environmental awareness of laboratory workers and students; andto create a system which promotes continous improvement of the environmental impacts of laboratory work.

To date, these parts of the EMP have been developed:

• The policy statement
• The initial review of the current environmental procedures at UVM, which also describes the advantages of developing a more formal EMP
• A definition of the laboratory activities and process covered by the EMP,
• The environmental aspects and impacts of those activities.
• The objectives and targets of the environmental management plan are described in the proposed Environmental Management Standard being developed as part of the Project XL Final Project Agreement.
• A description of the regulatory and other requirements which will be considered in developing the management system
• A description of the XL stakeholder process and community outreach part of the EMP.
