RCRA - RECORDKEEPING
> Overview
At this point in the EVC tour, you know that your school generates hazardous waste
and you probably already know a bit about how to store the waste, but then what?
How does it get shipped off site to a facility permitted to treat, store or dispose
of the waste? The simple answer is that hazardous waste must be shipped under
a manifest, i.e., a document that summarizes the history of the shipment beginning
with the generator, followed by the transpsorter(s), the facility that handles
or treats the waste, and then back to the generator. Certain wastes may not be
disposed of in landfills and special notification forms must be prepared for hazardous
waste regarding these “land ban” requirements. A detailed discussion
on hazardous waste generator classification follows in this section of the EVC.
In addition, it is important to note that some states may have more stringent
requirements than the Federal requirements for hazardous waste manifesting - consult
your state’s environmental regulations for these requirements.
Continue on with this EVC to learn more about hazardous waste manifesting and
land disposal restriction requirements potentially applicable to your campus’
hazardous waste storage facility.
