Hazardous waste, spent solvents, used oil, fluorescent light bulbs, and batteries. Do these sound like the sorts of waste materials that accumulate at your school everyday?
Chances are, you answered yes to that question. If so, your college or university needs to implement programs for gathering, segregating, storing and shipping waste for off-site disposal, recycling or additional treatment. Included in this section of the EVC are activities to help you manage hazardous waste. Among these activities are:
- Training
- Waste reduction
- Container labeling and management (including air emissions and hazardous waste tank requirements)
- Inspections
- Emergency response and contingency planning
- Floor drains
- Manifests and land-ban certifications
Continue on through this portion of the EVC tour for information in everyday language about the environmental regulations and best practices related to storing hazardous waste at a school. As you apply this information, you’ll be better positioned to ensure compliance.
