RCRA - STORAGE/DISPOSAL > Overview

Facilities storing hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) either as a Small Quantity Generator (SQG) or as a Large Quantity Generator (LQG) must comply with specific requirements related to preventing emergencies and also preparing for them. These requirements include:

  • Appointing a laboratory emergency coordinator
  • Posting emergency contact information in the lab
  • Employee training
  • Installing alarms and communication system
  • Obtaining emergency-response equipment.

If your lab is at a school or university that is a SQG or LQG, continue on to the next level of this section of the EVC to learn more about the emergency equipment and emergency planning and prevention requirements of RCRA. Many states also have their own, sometimes more stringent, regulations.
