What’s the first thing you think of in regard to the environmental hazards
of printing? If you answered chemicals, waste management and fumes, you’re
on the right track.
As with other areas of the art and theater departments, the print shop is governed
primarily by two federal environmental regulations: the Emergency Planning and
Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), which applies to chemical storage, and
the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which has to do with the
management of hazardous waste. These environmental regulations aren’t
really that complicated, especially once you become aware of basic rules and
procedures.
Follow the links through this section of the EVC to learn more about environmental
laws, regulations and best practices associated with working in printing operations-including
ways to minimize the fumes you encounter while working in the print room.
