Environmental Policy
An environmental policy defines your organization’s commitment
to the environment through continual improvement in environmental
performance. A strong, clear environmental policy can serve as
a starting point for developing your EMS. The policy should be
evaluated regularly and modified to reflect changing environmental
priorities.
At colleges and universities, the policy should function in two
ways:
1. Within the college
or university (faculty, students, and administrative, operations,
maintenance, physical plant,
and faculty employees)
the policy should focus on environmental issues
associated with activities and services.
2. Outside the college or university (regulators and community)
the policy is a public commitment to address environmental
issues and continually improving environmental performance.
The environmental policy should address the following topics:
• Commitment
to compliance with applicable environmental legislation and
regulations
• Pollution prevention
• Continual improvement
