Presenter Biographies
Howard N. Apsan, Ph.D.
University Director of Environmental Health and Safety, The City University
of New York
Howard Apsan serves as the University Director of Environmental Health
and Safety, and is responsible for environmental health and safety
(EH&S) management and compliance throughout CUNY. Before joining
CUNY, Howard worked in the environmental field for almost twenty years,
including several years with the New York City Sanitation Department
and eight years as a Principal, and ultimately National Director, of
a nation-wide consulting firm. He advised industrial, commercial, and
public sector clients on a range of environmental, health and safety
issues, with a primary focus on management, compliance, risk minimization
and transactional support. He has worked throughout the United States
and has extensive international experience.
In addition to his management and consulting activities, he has been
a member of the faculty at Columbia University’s School of International
and Public Affairs since 1986. He has also served on the United States
Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) for ISO 14000, the American Society
for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Environmental Committee (E-50), and
chaired the New York Chamber of Commerce Environment and Energy Committee.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of Environmental Quality Management,
and writes and lectures regularly. He also holds several EH&S licenses,
certifications and accreditations.
Donald Carli
President and Founder, Nima Hunter Inc.
Donald Carli is President and Founder of Nima Hunter Inc., a marketing
research consultancy founded in 1986 that offers strategic planning,
market research, technology assessment and marketing advisory services
to clients on a worldwide basis. Nima Hunter Inc. clients include Adobe,
DuPont, Fujifilm, Hewlett Packard, Kodak, Presstek and Xerox. Mr. Carli
has over 25 years of experience in the application of qualitative and
quantitative marketing research methods and has conducted major marketing
research studies for GAMIS, NPES and AIGA and has conducted numerous
proprietary market forecasts and research studies. He has also conducted
major international studies addressing environmental management, corporate
social responsibility and sustainability.
Mr. Carli is a Sloan Foundation Industry Studies Program affiliate
and a member of the faculty at New York City College of Technology
of the City University of New York as well as a Senior Research Fellow
with the non-profit Institute for Sustainable Communication. He is
Technology Editor for Graphic Arts Monthly and Packaging Digest magazines
and a contributing editor to Gravure magazine as well as a consulting
editor to Actuel Grafisk Information magazine in Sweden.
Vincent T. Franconere, CHMM
Director of Environmental Health and Safety, University at Albany,
SUNY
Vincent Franconere is the Director of EH&S at the University of
Albany. He is an alumnus of the University at Albany, SUNY and has
been professionally affiliated with the University of Albany since
1978 advancing from the Radiation Safety Officer to the Director of
EH&S in 1983. Vincent is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager,
Certified Radiation Equipment Safety Officer, and Licensed Medical
Physicist in the practice of Medical Health Physics & Diagnostic
Radiological Physics. He is a charter member, past President, and current
Executive Board Member of the SESHA Environmental Health and Safety
Association of NY, Inc. Vincent was the recipient of the 2004-05 SUNY
Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.
Al Iannuzzi, Ph.D.
Executive Director, WorldWide Environmental Affairs, Johnson & Johnson
Al is employed by Johnson & Johnson as Executive Director in the
WorldWide Environmental Affairs group. Some of his responsibilities
include: coordinating the WW Medicines & Nutritionals group environmental
programs, spearheading Johnson & Johnson’s Design for the
environment program, Healthy Planet 2010 Sustainability goals, regulatory
initiatives, talent management, environmental cost accounting and remediation
programs. He also has experience as an environmental consultant and
worked as a hazardous waste inspector for the NJ Department of Environmental
Protection. Al received his Ph.D. degree in Environmental Policy from
the Union Institute & University in Cincinnati where he researched
voluntary compliance and self-regulation. He authored the book “Industry
Self-regulation and Voluntary Environmental Compliance” (CRC
Press, 2002).
Riva Krut, Ph.D.
VP and Regional Manager, Cameron-Cole, LLC
Dr. Krut is a Vice President in the Strategic Services practice of
Cameron-Cole, LLC, and Regional Manager of their New York office. Dr.
Krut has worked, written, and consulted for 20 years in the area of
voluntary environmental management, communications and public reporting.
This has included working on EMSs, supply chain management and sustainable
development. Dr. Krut has authored or co-authored eight major published
reports in these areas, including a book on ISO 14001, and numerous
articles. She led the implementation of ISO 14001 at the NYC Transit
Authority, the first public transportation agency to achieve this certification;
and the award-winning ISO 14001 EMS design and implementation at a
national waste-hauling company. Current or recent clients include several
Fortune 500 multinationals as well as a handful of national companies.
Steven Lanou
Deputy Director, Environmental Programs Office, Massachusetts Institute
of Technology
Steven Lanou is a Deputy Director in the Environmental Programs Office
leading the office’s campus sustainability program. In this capacity,
Mr. Lanou works to develop, promote, and coordinate MIT-wide policies
and initiatives to advance the Institute’s commitment to sustainable
practices. Mr. Lanou is an environmental planner with 15 years experience
in environmental policy development and program implementation. He
holds a Bachelors degree in international economic development from
Brown University, and a Masters degree in environmental policy and
planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Rich Miller
Director, Environmental Policy, University of Connecticut
Rich Miller develops policies and coordinates initiatives for reducing
UConn’s ecological footprint, protecting natural resources, and
ensuring green building and low-impact design. He works on sustainability
issues ranging from climate change to recycling, water conservation
and environmental literacy, and oversees compliance with land use,
water, air and other environmental requirements.
Before joining UConn with the creation of the Office of Environmental
Policy in 2002, Rich had previous jobs as an energy and environmental
lobbyist, practicing environmental and land use attorney, corporate
environmental manager, and adjunct professor of environmental law and
management. He served as a member of the Connecticut Council on Environmental
Quality for five years and is a long-time member and current chair
of his town’s Inland Wetlands & Conservation Commission.
Michael C. Quinlan
Associate Vice President for Business Services, Rutgers, the State
University of New Jersey
Michael Quinlan has over 25 years of professional experience in environmental,
health, and safety practice at both public and private institutions.
This has included serving as a compliance officer for the USDOL Occupational
Safety and Health Administration; a staff industrial hygienist at ARAMCO
in Saudi Arabia and at Princeton University. Formerly the Director
of the Environmental Health and Safety Department at Rutgers, The State
University of New Jersey, he was appointed in 2003 as the Associate
Vice President for Business Services. He currently manages a number
of auxiliary functions including the EHS operations at Rutgers.
Peter Schneider
Executive Director, Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Boston
Univerity
President, Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence
Peter Schneider is the Executive Director of Boston University's Office
of Environmental Health and Safety and the President of C2E2. Prior
to joining BU in 1997, he was a Vice President and Associate Principal
with GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. providing consulting services in strategic
environmental management. Peter is a Certified Environmental Professional.
He holds a BS from Northeastern University and a Masters degree from
BU. He has taught graduate courses Environmental Management at both
Tufts University and BU.
Ralph Stuart
Environmental Safety Manager, University of Vermont
Ralph Stuart has been in the Risk Management Department at the University
of Vermont since 1985. He has led the development of the Environmental
Safety program there since that time, including participation in the
Lab XL project for regulatory reinvention with the EPA. He has a bachelor's
degree in geologic engineering from Cornell University and a master's
degree in environmental engineering from UVM. He is a Certified Industrial
Hygienist and is active in the C2E2, American Chemical Society's Division
of Chemical Health and Safety and the UVM Environmental Council.
